Keep Your New Years Resolution

January 15, 2015 — Derrick Cope

Did you make a New Year's resolution this year?

It is a great way to start a new healthy habits, especially exercise. If you didn't, well it isn't too late. Unfortunately, many exercise resolutions end up in the on the junk pile before the end of January. ...and so I thought I would share of few of my tips to keep myself motivated and doing my Pilates exercises.

1. Make It a Daily Routine
Execise doesn't work if it isn't a daily ritual. Inevitably, things will come up to disrupt your exercise time, but if it is a daily routine then it doesn't matter because you can resume tomorrow. If you only exercise on certain days then missing that day can't very disruptive or even end your routine.
2. Pick Something you Like
If your chosen exercise feels like pulling teeth then you probably should find something else. Something social is usually better but if it requires lots of organizatin then that can become a problem as well.
3. Earlier is better
We all have a lot more control over our own schedule in the morning. That's the best time to schedule exercise. Emergencies and unavoidable activities begin to take over as the day progresses which enable all kinds of excuses to skip exercise. Also, there is scientific evidence that shows getting your metabolism going in the morning makes it stay higher all day thereby burning more calories.
4. Keep the Duration Manageable
Keep the duration of exercise between 30 to 60 minutes. That is plenty of time to get the benefits of exercise without over doing it. Its more important to do it daily. Also, don't be afraid to take a break during exercise. Give yourself time to ramp up your conditioning level.
5. Be Nice to Yourself
If you miss a day then enjoy it! Don't beat yourself up. Start again tommorrow. Keep going and it will get easier and easier.

See you in class!
